Earthquake update: a new group of volunteers on site
A new group of volunteers has reached Hatay, the area most affected by the earthquake, in Turkey.
Amurt’s aid continues. The volunteers had two exploratory meetings with some local people. The first with Mehmet, an English teacher at the school of peace, which promotes ethnic and religious tolerance with the help of volunteers from all over the world, and Esra, also an English teacher, very active with the children.
The second in Defne, where they met Puren, a volunteer active in distributing necessities. With Puren they visited two tent camps, the first run by the Turkish civil protection, the second in the locality of Tavda, a village where the residents, about 150 people, are now camped in an olive grove. Currently two volunteers, Kanti and Gaungadhara, are working to create showers for these people.
“They welcomed us with kindness and hospitality,” the volunteers recounted, “we took part in the play activities with the children and were able to visit the local elementary school. It was a day full of emotions.”
