Kiirtan

Kiirtana

“To proclaim the glories of Parama puruśa, the Supreme Consciousness, in a loud voice is termed “kiirtana”.”A Few Problems Solved 4, “Supra-Aesthetic Science and Music”

Why we do it

The aim of yoga is Supreme Consciousness

  1. 1

The aim is Supreme Consciousness. The goal of yoga is far off, like a distant star system.

  2. 2

The instrument to reach that goal is the mind. It is the subtlest part of us, so it is the only part fine enough to reach the aim.

  3. 3

The method is meditation. Seeing a star takes a telescope pointed at it; reaching Supreme Consciousness takes the mind pointed at it. That is meditation.

  4. 4

The preparation and care. A telescope has to be looked after, cleaned and set right to see the stars. The mind is the same. Every practice does this for the mind, directly or through the body, because the mind is connected with the body.

See how it leads to the goal ↓

Reaching the goal through Kiirtan

Kiirtan brings us to the goal through devotion. What the mind thinks of, it becomes, and it thinks all the time, without effort, of what it loves. Kiirtan grows that love for the Supreme, so the mind thinks of Him more and more and becomes like Him faster. Kiirtan also prepares the mind for meditation: lifted and composed, it comes to one point, and a mind at one point gets the chance to be one with Him. That is the goal of yoga.

  1. 01

As we think, so we become

To reach Supreme Consciousness we must think of it all the time, because what we think of, we become. In meditation we do this: we concentrate on the high idea.

“It is the innate characteristic of the human mind to become as it thinks – Yádrshii bhávaná yasya siddhirbhavati tádrshii [“As you think, so you become.”]”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 4, “Tantra Is Sádhaná, Sádhaná Is Tantra”
  2. 02

How do we think of one idea all the time?

How do we make ourselves think all the time of one idea? The best way is to love what we do. When we love a person or something, we think of it all the time. We make no effort to do it: it happens by itself.

“It is only possible by leaving aside all else, then one remains constantly in His ideation. What is love? It is the expressed form of devotion. Only one who has love for Parama Puruśa can take His ideation.”
Subháśita Saḿgraha 19, “The Supreme Aesthetic Science and the Cult of Devotion”
  3. 03

    So devotion is very important

That is why this love, or devotion, or bhakti, is so important on the spiritual path.

“But those who do ásanas, práńáyáma, etc., without devotion are cultivating the desert. Without the water of devotion, their effort will not succeed.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 23, “The Bliss of the Devotee”
  4. 04

The best way to grow it is kiirtan

The best way to cultivate this in ourselves is to sing kiirtan.

“Where My devotees sing My praise, do kiirtana, there I go – I cannot help going there.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 23, “The Bliss of the Devotee”
  5. 05

Kiirtan with the idea of Supreme Consciousness

If we sing kiirtan with the idea of Supreme Consciousness in the mind, a feeling for it arises in us. Devotion comes.

“During kiirtana what happens? The mind gets lifted, exalted, and as a result you will enjoy a particular nature of peace.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12, “The Chance to Be One with Him”
  6. 06

With devotion we think of it all the time, and change faster

When we have devotion, when love comes, bhakti, we begin to think of it all the time. And the process “what we think of, we become” runs much faster.

“kiirtana is a valuable aid in spiritual practice (sádhaná) to accelerate the speed of human progress towards the Supreme Conciousness”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Kiirtana Dispels Calamities”
  7. 07

It also prepares the mind for meditation

Besides this, kiirtan helps to prepare the mind before meditation.

“So your mind must be in the form – in the state – of composure while doing your sádhaná, and in order to bring the mind to a state of composure you are to do – what? You are to do kiirtana.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12, “The Chance to Be One with Him”
  8. 08

    One-pointed, one with Him

A mind composed by kiirtan comes to one point in meditation, and a mind at one point gets the chance to be one with the Supreme. This is the goal.

“When the mind gets pinnacled, when the mind gets apexed, comes to a particular point, that is, comes to one point only, under such circumstances jiivas, created beings, get the chance to be one with Him.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12, “The Chance to Be One with Him”

What it is

Kiirtana is to proclaim the glories of the Lord loudly, for all to hear: the Sanskrit root means to utter something loudly so that others may also hear it. Singing that is conveyed to the Lord alone is called bhajana and is purely personal. Kiirtana is sung aloud, and the vibration it creates in the atmosphere influences others as well.

In Ananda Marga the kiirtana is Bábá nám kevalam, “only the name of the Supreme Consciousness”, repeated to different tunes and combined with the lalita mármika dance. It has no restriction of time, place or person.

In the sources

“The Saḿskrta root verb kirtt means to “utter something loudly so that others may also hear it”; thus kiirtana means to proclaim the glories of the Lord loudly for all to hear.”A Few Problems Solved 4, “Supra-Aesthetic Science and Music”

“What is the meaning of Kiirtana? “Bábá Nám Kevalam”. “Bábá” means “the Dearest One”. Only the name of the Dearest One, only the name of Parama Puruśa, and not so many names – Helsinki or London or Santiago or Georgetown.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12, “The Chance to Be One with Him”

“We repeat siddha mantra (Bábá nám kevalam) to different tunes.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 30, “Bio-Psycho-Spiritual System of Kiirtana”

“Shiva introduced the táńd́ava dance, and Párvatii introduced the lalita mármika dance. Ananda Marga has accepted the system of combining the lalita mármika dance with kiirtana.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 15, “Táńd́ava, Shástra, and the Teachings of Shiva”

“In kiirtana there is no restriction regarding time, place or person, no distinction between educated and uneducated, between black and white.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Kiirtana: The Panacea for all Afflictions”

How to do it

  1. 1

Lalita mármikaÁnanda Vacanámrtam 12, “Dance, Mudrá and Tantra”

“What you did just at present while singing kiirtana, that is called lalita. Lalita represents that now we are enjoying bliss, we are in a happy mood. We are in a happy mood, and the hands should be above ninety degrees.”

  2. 2

Bábá nám kevalamÁnanda Vacanámrtam 30, “Bio-Psycho-Spiritual System of Kiirtana”

“The whole siddha mantra should be uttered fully in each phrase of the tune – Bábá nám kevalam – and not a part of it – while doing kiirtana.”

  3. 3

Loudly enough to be heardÁnanda Vacanámrtam 8, “The Lord Should Always Be Praised”

“Kiirtana should be sung loudly enough to be heard by others.”

  4. 4

The feelingwithin two or three minutes

“When the first syllable bá is uttered, the feeling should be, “I am crossing the threshold and entering the new world;” and when the last syllable ma is uttered, the feeling should be, “I have accomplished my duty.” If the kiirtana is done with these feelings, within two or three minutes the effect will come into play.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 30, “Bio-Psycho-Spiritual System of Kiirtana”

  5. 5

MrdauṋgaÁnanda Vacanámrtam 8, “Sádhaná, Abhidhyána and Kiirtana”

“However, while doing kiirtan, if one listens to anything else, the mind will be diverted. Suppose, while doing kiirtana, one lady asks another, “Well sister, what did you cook today?” This will also be heard by the practitioners of kiirtana. To prevent these undesirable sounds from being heard, it is advisable to play some instrument during kiirtana. A mrdauṋga [a kind of drum] or some similar instrument should be used, but one should not play any heavy-sounding instrument like a d́hák [a large drum played with sticks], a d́hol [a loud drum] or a gong.”

  6. 6

Sádhaná just after doing KiirtanaÁnanda Vacanámrtam 12, “The Chance to Be One with Him”

“And if you start your Sádhaná just after doing Kiirtana, you will enjoy bliss. So Kiirtana is a necessity, is an indispensable necessity for proper Sádhaná.”

  7. 7

Sincerely and wholeheartedlyeven for five or ten minutes

“Whether good or bad, if people do kiirtana sincerely and wholeheartedly even for five or ten minutes, Parama Puruśa becomes pleased.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Serve the Supreme by Kiirtana”

Lalita mármika

“And Párvatii, the spouse of Shiva, invented lalita mármika, which means “voice of the inner spirit”. The dance used for kiirtana is lalita mármika. It represents the inner voice of the spiritual aspirant. The main thing in lalita mármika is the expression through mudrá.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 6, “The Cosmic Father Has a Special Responsibility”

“In Lalita Mármika, the position of the arms is above 90 degrees. This denotes that it is a Mudrá – in Saḿskrta it is called a “Mudrá”. This Mudrá means, “O Supreme Creator, Thou art mine and I am Yours. I am Thine.””Ánanda Vacanámrtam 12, “A Purely Personal Entity”

“Now lalita mármik dance can maintain adjustment with kiirtana without causing fatigue in the human body: that is why lalita is prescribed in kiirtana. Mahaprabhu also prescribed it as part of kiirtana. Now, mármik means that which touches the innermost recesses of the heart: so it is called lalita mármik.”A Few Problems Solved 3, “Song, Dance and Instrumental Music”

“Lalita is to be used during kiirtana. It is the only dance which is universally accepted as the best dance for kiirtana.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 6, “The Cosmic Father Has a Special Responsibility”

How kiirtan is danced

Kiirtan is an ancient spiritual dance; its full name is lalita mármika. It is danced before meditation: it calms the mind, which helps concentration, and relaxes the body, so that sitting for meditation is easier.

Kiirtan begins with namaskár, and then the arms are raised. If the arms get tired, do namaskár again and keep the joined palms at the level of the heart. With every step the leg bends a little at the knee; this helps the knees stay relaxed. The mantra Bábá Nám Kevalam is sung to any beautiful melody. The eyes may be open, but kiirtan is more effective with the eyes closed.

While doing kiirtan, keep the mind on the beautiful, mind-expanding meaning of the mantra Bábá Nám Kevalam: everything in this universe is an expression of infinite Consciousness.

Types of kiirtan

Collective kiirtan

Kiirtan can be sung by two or three people or by a thousand. When many sing together, their physical energies work as one and their mental energies flow in the same channel.

“If even two or three people gather together, they can do kiirtan collectively; if one thousand people assemble together, then also they can do kiirtan.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Serve the Supreme by Kiirtana”

“At the time of kiirtana, so many people, so many devotees assemble, and all their collective physical energies function unitedly. But more than that their collective psychic energies are flowing in the same channel under the inspiration of Parama Puruśa.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Kiirtana Dispels Calamities”

Akhańd́a kiirtan

As Ácárya Parameshvaránanda Avadhúta recalls: “In Ananda Marga, there are essentially two special categories of kiirtan. One is Akhańd́a kiirtan and the other is Avarta kiirtan.” (Divine Experiences: An Autobiography, “Significance of Avarta Kiirtan” (2015))

As Ácárya Kiirtánánanda Avadhúta recalls: “One day, speaking of kiirtan, Bábá said: if you do akhańd́a kiirtan for a long time and then go to some solitary place and sit for sádhaná, you will hear within you the sound of Bábá Nám Kevalam floating down endlessly from the great sky.” (Remembering Bábá, “Bábá Nám Kevalam”)

Ávarta kiirtan

Ávarta kiirtan is kiirtan that moves in a circle. It is done by four successive turns of 90 degrees, clockwise, and is sung in six different directions.

Each direction has its own spiritual ideation.

  1. 1

    The starting direction

“I am the embodiment of sincerity.”

  2. 2

    First turn of 90°, clockwise

“I have an innate love for Parama Puruśa.”

  3. 3

    Second turn

“My mind is purified in the fire of devotion.”

  4. 4

    Third turn

“I overcome all inner and outer obstacles on the way to my spiritual goal.”

  5. 5

Fourth turn: back to the start, the eyes turned upward

“O Lord, take me on Your lap.”

  6. 6

The starting direction, the body bent slightly down

“All that I have, I give to You.”

Nagar kiirtan

As Ác. Shamitánanda Avadhúta recalls: “One morning at four o'clock, I had the duty to lead Nagar Kiirtan through the streets of Burdwan. Unfortunately, heavy rain started as we assembled on the veranda. The Márgiis were ready to go, but I wanted to avoid the rain. An hour later, even though it was still raining, I yelled, "Parampita Bábá ki jái!" and started nagar kiirtan under the rain. As soon as we crossed the street, the rain stopped. We sang kiirtan for two hours through a few nearby villages.” (Bábá Unparalleled: 102 Stories, no. 36)

How it works

In kiirtana the voice teaches the ear and the mind to take only His name: Bábá nám kevalam, only the name of the Supreme Consciousness, and not many names. A mind that runs to three or four things at once is not pointed. Sense and motor organs left free may lead a person astray; in kiirtana none of them is free, all are kept engaged in a spiritual pursuit.

Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti
“There are two distinct paths. The first is to stop the extroversial tendencies of mind and become absorbed in the inner goal; the second is to keep all the sense organs engaged in the same activity, such as kiirtana. When kiirtana was first invented, the psycho-philosophy behind it was this: at the time of kiirtana, the vocal cord sings, the ears hear, and the hands and feet dance, and thus all the organs are kept preoccupied with the divine.”
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, Ánanda Vacanámrtam 8, “Sádhaná, Abhidhyána and Kiirtana”

Stories

  • If you want to develop devotion

… My trainer hardly ever sang kiirtan. He used to say, “Only those who are weak-minded need kiirtan. My meditation is very powerful, so I don’t require such singing.” But Bábá advised otherwise: “The nucleus of devotion is not to be found in the heart of the dry yogi. Rather, it is located in the hearts of those who are practicing kiirtan. If you want to develop devotion, when you have 30 minutes for spiritual practices, spend 20 minutes in kiirtan, and 10 minutes in meditation.” …Read the story

  • The one who would not sing

There is one dádá who is very intellectual, and he used to think that he knew more than anybody else. When Bábá gave the "Bábá Nám Kevalam" kiirtan to be done before sádhaná, this dádá didn't like it; he said it was for devotees, and he didn't like to sing and dance in front of people. He never did kiirtan. One day we came for reporting, and Bábá requested us to do Ávarta Kiirtan. This dádá had to do it; he couldn't avoid the situation. Before Bábá left the room, he looked at this dádá and said, "I think you like kiirtan very much, right?" "Yes, Bábá," Dádá replied. "Kiirtan is very good for you," Bábá said, and left. In the evening I went to massage Bábá, and he asked me about this dádá. I had to reply truthfully, "Bábá, until now he didn't like kiirtan at all." Bábá told me that from that day he would like it a lot. The last time I saw this dádá he was singing kiirtan all the time.Read the story

  • Kiirtan sung inside

One afternoon during the Ranchi D.M.C., Bábá was seated on the veranda of His house. A few of us workers and some Márgiis were there. Bábá said, "You can get samádhi even just by doing kiirtan." Bábá called one Dádá and asked him to do kiirtan. He started doing kiirtan, after sometimes his voice became lower and lower and finally he stopped singing kiirtan externally. But he was dancing as if he was doing usual kiirtan. Bábá said, "Now he is doing kiirtan internally, he is now one with the idea (Bháva) of kiirtan. This is known as "Bháva Samádhi." If he is not disturbed, then he will continue this and enjoy it very much."Read the story

  • Where to keep the mind

Calcutta. About twenty other Márgiis and I were singing Prabhat Sangiit for Bábá. He interrupted everyone in order to speak to me. Pointing to His throat, he said, “While singing, you should keep your mind concentrated here.” I was surprised because, when I was a child, our singing teacher instructed us to project from the chest. … A few days earlier, He said, “Those who regularly sing kiirtan gradually develop a sweet and melodious voice.” Is the reason simply practice, or is it (as I believe) because the kiirtan singer is not trying to impress anyone—only to serenade God?Read the story

  • All night in Timmern

TIMMERN is situated 250 kilometres from Berlin, in a peaceful, scenic place. We own two large buildings there, which radiate spirituality to the surroundings. On the evening of 20 May, Bábá gave a General darshana. In fact, Bábá was so pleased that He declared this General darshana as a DMS (Dharma Mahá Sammelan). The discourse was very good and spiritually elevating. After Dharma Mahá Sammelan, the Márgiis decided to do kirtana the whole night. The hall in which kirtana was being done was located on the upper floor. At around midnight, Bábá came out of His room and went upstairs to the hall. He stayed there for a while and blessed the devotees. His presence heightened the sweetness of the kirtana, as if it were filled with nectar. The Márgiis were overwhelmed by a deep flow of devotion, feeling so fortunate and enjoying the bliss of the kirtana all night.Read the story

  • The first ávarta kiirtan

The DMC at Varanasi was historic. It was here that Bábá first introduced Avarta kiirtan, which is an essential part of madhura sádhaná. … Since then, Avarta kiirtan has become an essential component of collective meditation. The collective performance of Avarta kiirtan creates a sweet environment that inspires blissful waves of devotion in the practitioners. … The next morning, Bábá emerged from His room earlier than usual, at around nine o’clock. He then asked the sentry to call all the workers into His room. All of us went in promptly and found Bábá sitting up on the bed with a graceful charm. His face shone with a special glow, and a sweet smile played upon His lips. After a short pause, He explained the reason for summoning us. He said that He wanted to introduce a new spiritual practice called Avarta kiirtan. He described the process of performing this new style of kiirtan. We then collectively performed Avarta kiirtan before Him. … … While madhura sádhaná is practiced exclusively by the monks and nuns of Ananda Marga, Bábá permitted the general Márgiis to perform Avarta kiirtan, which is a part of madhura sádhaná.Read the story

  • Singing all the way from Bombay

… Every day morning we all workers did three hours Akhańd́a kiirtan and then conducted Dharma Cakra. This created a good flow amongst the reporting session workers. Bábá was very happy to know that we were doing daily Akhańd́a kiirtan before reporting. When Bábá NAM KEVALAM is sung continuously for three hours then it is called Akhańd́a kiirtan. Akhańd́a kiirtan generates a tremendous high spiritual flow, which establishes everyone present there in a very high spiritual state of bliss. … … Bábá told us that HE would start giving personal contact again to Márgiis, when they arrive singing kiirtan from their places. It is called Kiirtana Parikramá. This message was conveyed to all the Márgiis all over India. Kiirtan parties started coming, by singing kiirtan all through their tour in the streets, in the train, in the bus and finally entered Bábá's quarter. Report was given to Bábá that kiirtan party arrived from a certain place. Then Bábá gave personal contact to all the Márgiis, who came to see Bábá, doing kiirtan all the way. Once, a kiirtan party came while we were in a 'reporting' session with Bábá. Bábá said, "Kiirtan becomes more rhythmic by playing drums with the tune. It seems that a kiirtan party has come from Bombay, as they have special tunes and a special style of singing and beating the drums." We went outside and saw that Márgiis have come from Bombay singing kiirtan all the way from Bombay to Calcutta, thousands of kilometers. Bábá gave personal contact to all the Márgiis who came from Bombay. …Read the story

  • The kiirtan heard in the sky

… It was one fine evening of 7th October. Bábá was sitting on a raised floor with a few devotees outside the guest house. It was a peaceful mystic evening. An unparalleled natural beauty surrounded the place. All of a sudden Bábá broke the silence. He pointed to distant sky and said that it appears as if a sweet melody is being carried by the air. Try to listen carefully. After a while all the sádhakas present there in one voice spoke at once in amazement. They told Bábá that they were hearing the melody of ‘Bábá Náma kevaláḿ samkiirtana’. … Bábá broke the silence and asked how would it be if a 24 hour Akhańd́a Kiirtana was arranged tomorrow. All those present instantly agreed. … Bábá returned back after the akhańd́a kiirtan to Ranchi. It was the evening darshana on the occasion of Diipavali, Bábá said now the Kiirtan has been empowered for the spiritual benefit of humanity. It is your duty now to propagate Kiirtan throughout the world.Read the story

  • Brothers and sisters, together

I was in India, in Ananda Nagar, in January of 1981 during a Dharma Maha Chakra. Until that moment, it was the custom that sisters would not do kiirtan with brothers, in front of Bábá. … Once I even cried when brothers started doing Kiirtan in front of Bábá, feeling myself "kept" away from Bábá's Blissful nectar. But in that occasion, the moment the kiirtan was about to begin, Bábá, made a gesture with His hands clearly instructing All to rise and do Kiirtan in His presence. Great was my emotion and joy. • Kiirtan at three in the morning

There was a devotee from Colombia, South America, who traveled for the first time to India to visit Bábá. She traveled alone and carried with her the address of the Ananda Marga jágrti in New Delhi. … On reaching the area, the taxi driver tried to locate the address but could not find the place. He searched for the address for a long time, going around in circles, but failed to find it. … Finally, the driver decided to take her to the police station, hoping to get some information regarding the address. Realizing the hopelessness of her situation, she mentally surrendered to Bábá, pleading for His guidance. All of a sudden, she heard the sound of kiirtan. She immediately told the driver to stop. … She jumped out of the taxi and pressed the bell of the door of the house from where the sound of kiirtan was coming. A dádá opened the door. … The dádá was perplexed. He looked at his watch. It was only 3:00 am in the morning. Everybody was sleeping like a log. He simply could not understand how she could have heard kiirtan at three in the morning! But the sister understood fully. It was His grace, only His grace.Read the story

  • “At the place of kiirtana, not only the people who are themselves doing kiirtana will be benefited, but also those who are not participating – and even those who are not participating and who do not even like it – they will also be benefited!”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Kiirtana Dispels Calamities”

  • “In addition, kiirtana removes the collective psychic afflictions as well – those which are already existing, and these which have not yet arrived but about which we have premonitions of their impending arrival. If kiirtana is done in advance, those impending troubles disappear.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Kiirtana Dispels Calamities”
  • “Kiirtan gives bliss to Parama Puruśa in the mental sphere, and it also brings joy to human beings both individually and collectively; it leads them on the path of welfare and frees them from all these complexities.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Serve the Supreme by Kiirtana”
  • “Philosophically, Parama Puruśa is omnipresent, but His nucleus remains at a particular place. That particular place, where the nucleus resides, is not Vaekuńt́ha. That particular place is where His ardent devotees are singing His glories in kiirtana.”
Subháśita Saḿgraha 13, “Yoga and Tantra”
  • “Now, whatever might be the physical miseries – be they natural or man-made – if people collectively chant kiirtana, the calamities are dispelled then and there.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Kiirtana Dispels Calamities”
  • “That is why I say that it is imperative for every intelligent person, every wise person, every clever person, to always do kiirtana, without any consideration of time, place and person.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 22, “Kiirtana Dispels Calamities”
