Health

“You will have to take work from your bodily machine. This machine should always be kept in perfect working condition.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 20, “‘Prańipátena Pariprashnena Sevayá’ – 2”

Why we do it

The aim of yoga is Supreme Consciousness

  1. 1

The aim is Supreme Consciousness. The goal of yoga is far off, like a distant star system.

  2. 2

The instrument to reach that goal is the mind. It is the subtlest part of us, so it is the only part fine enough to reach the aim.

  3. 3

The method is meditation. Seeing a star takes a telescope pointed at it; reaching Supreme Consciousness takes the mind pointed at it. That is meditation.

  4. 4

The preparation and care. A telescope has to be looked after, cleaned and set right to see the stars. The mind is the same. Every practice does this for the mind, directly or through the body, because the mind is connected with the body.

See how it leads to the goal ↓

Reaching the goal through Health

Health brings us to the goal by keeping the instrument of sádhaná in working order. The body has to work hard, or its glands fail and the mind suffers; it has to rest, to start afresh. But the body is only one of three: the psychic and spiritual bodies need their exercise too, and a mind properly turned to the Supreme becomes one with Him. That is the goal of yoga.

  1. 01

For sádhaná the body is necessary

Human life is for sádhaná, and sádhaná needs a body; so the body has to be looked after in every way.

“An animal life is given to carnal pleasure human life is for sádhaná; but, for sádhaná the body is necessary – so in order to maintain the body, you will have to be vigilant about everything in the world.”
    Caryácarya 2, “Sádhaná (Intuitional Practice)”
  2. 02

    Work

The arms and legs must do work, hard work, or the glands do not secrete their hormones as they should.

“The arms and legs should do work; all parts of the body should be utilized properly; you should get work out of them, hard work – this is a must. Else hormone secretion from the glands and sub-glands will be hampered.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 20, “Prańipátena Pariprashnena Sevayá – 2”
  3. 03

    Unused, it breaks down

A body that is not properly used breaks down, and then the mind is harmed as well.

“What will happen if the physical body is not properly utilized? The body will break down; and in consequence the mind also will be harmfully affected.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 20, “Prańipátena Pariprashnena Sevayá – 2”
  4. 04

    Rest

Like a machine after a hard day, the body needs rest to recover and start afresh.

“But just as a machine must be allowed rest after a hard dayʼs labour, so the human body, when it becomes exhausted after a dayʼs hard labour, needs rest to recoup and to start afresh with renewed energy.”
Ánanda Vacanámrtam 20, “Prańipátena Pariprashnena Sevayá – 2”
  5. 05

    Three bodies

The physical body is only one of three. The psychic and the spiritual bodies need their proper exercise too.

“Human existence has got three parts, three important and inseparable portions: physical body, psychic body and spiritual body. So there must be proper exercise of not only the physical body but also the psychic and spiritual bodies.”
Subháśita Saḿgraha 19, “The Path of Salvation”
  6. 06

    One with the goal

A mind properly turned to the Supreme becomes one with Him. This is the goal.

“When mind is properly objectivated the human entity becomes one with the goal, one with the Supreme Entity and he or she will attain salvation”
Subháśita Saḿgraha 19, “The Path of Salvation”

What it is

This page gathers the general rules of health in Caryácarya and what Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti says about work, rest, water and fresh air, with rules for women and for children.

In the sources

“The arms and legs should do work; all parts of the body should be utilized properly; you should get work out of them, hard work – this is a must. Else hormone secretion from the glands and sub-glands will be hampered.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 20, “‘Prańipátena Pariprashnena Sevayá’ – 2”

“We have attained this physical frame in order to work, not for uninterrupted rest. But just as a machine must be allowed rest after a hard day’s labour, so the human body, when it becomes exhausted after a day’s hard labour, needs rest to recoup and to start afresh with renewed energy.”Ánanda Vacanámrtam 20, “‘Prańipátena Pariprashnena Sevayá’ – 2”

“You do so many physical exercises, engage in so many sports and past times for the development of physical health and it is a necessity, rather a dire necessity for a living society. But most people neglect the exercise of their mind and spirit.”Subháśita Saḿgraha 19, “The Path of Salvation”

Alkaline food is the most beneficial for children.”Caryácarya 3, “General Health Rules”

“It is particularly beneficial for children to spend some time every day in the fresh air and sunshine.”Caryácarya 3, “General Health Rules”

What studies found

Walking, regular sleep and nature

  • In a pooled analysis of 15 cohorts (47,471 adults), people who took more steps a day had a lower risk of dying from any cause. The benefit leveled off at about 6,000–8,000 steps a day for adults over 60, and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults.

Paluch AE et al., 2022, The Lancet Public Health

  • In 60,977 UK Biobank participants whose sleep was measured with wrist sensors, going to bed and getting up at regular times predicted lower mortality more strongly than the length of sleep did: the more regular sleepers had a 20–48% lower risk of death than the least regular.

Windred DP et al., 2024, SLEEP

  • In a survey of nearly 20,000 adults in England, people who spent at least 120 minutes a week in natural settings were more likely to report good health and well-being than people who spent none.

Stories

  • Eat, bathe and sleep on time

I was very sick for nearly fifteen days. After a while when I became a little better, Bábá called me to His room. When we were alone, He enquired about my health. He said, "Don't worry you will be alright soon. You have to remember one thing, always be punctual about your eating, bath and sleep. If you maintain this, then your health will always be good."Read the story

  • The same routine, even in jail

Bábá was so strict in following His schedule that He never deviated from it even in the face of adverse situations. Whether in jail or at home He performed His daily programme according to schedule. Prior to imprisonment He was in the habit of doing sádhaná first; then came bath and breakfast; and a walk in the open air accompanied by some disciples and workers followed. During imprisonment Bábá followed the same routine. In jail, too, He performed sádhaná, took His bath and ate His breakfast according to His own schedule every morning. He never budged an inch from this routine. Those "field walks", as they were called, were a highly delightful time for those who accompanied Him. During a walk He would speak on so many different subjects and His endless knowledge of the universe engulfed us. Those Márgiis who had that opportunity know how very blessed they were to get that divine experience. There was no open space in the jail for a walk, but that did not hinder Him much. There was a narrow space in His cell. After eating breakfast Bábá, with a newspaper in His hand, paced slowly up and down the cell with us walking beside Him. While skimming through the pages of the newspaper, He talked on different matters with us. Time passed in this way, but not for a single moment did He deviate from the daily routine.Read the story

  • The friend who kept the money

During training I used to see everyone smoking and this gave birth to my desire to start smoking again. Although after the punishment Bábá had given me I had given up smoking the desire began to grow in this company. The more I tried to suppress this desire, the stronger it became and this continued for days until I began to feel that I would not be able to suppress it any longer. … One day I went to the extent of asking for a cigarette from one of my friends from Bihar. He was a devout Muslim, but he used to smoke. He knew the circumstances under which I had given up smoking, and so he asked what I would do with a cigarette and I replied that I would smoke. He looked at me in surprise and said, "What are you saying?" I told him that I was serious about starting smoking again. He now began to plead, "You have given up smoking as a result of a vow taken by you after your guru punished you. How then are you thinking like this? Please try to keep your vow." In spite of my insistent request he did not give me a cigarette. Now I began to keep all my money with him so that I could not buy cigarettes. Whenever I asked for money from him, in a very gentle and cultured way he would first ascertain my needs and would supply me with these things immediately. But he never allowed me to handle cash. … One day oppressed by intense desires, I beseeched Bábá that He may kindly help me from descending into hell again. Bábá miraculously graced me and the desire to smoke ended forever. …Read the story

What Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti said

  • “To maintain the internal functions of the body without hindrance and to maintain the internal liquid balance, everyone should drink a sufficient quantity of water every day.”
Yogic Treatments and Natural Remedies, “Appendix A: Water Drinking”
  • “If mothers are not healthy themselves, their children cannot remain healthy. So a mother who has the welfare of her children uppermost in her mind should keep a careful watch on her own health.”
    Caryácarya 3, “General Health Rules”
  • “If the body does not work up a sufficient sweat, then you should know that you have not taken the air properly.”
    Caryácarya 3, “Taking the Air”
  • “Pure and fresh air has the power to cure disease. It is advisable to breathe in as fully as possible, because when we do so, the air gets an opportunity to be completely absorbed by the lungs. It is better to take a walk in the fresh air than to ride a vehicle.”
    Caryácarya 3, “Taking the Air”
