Exploitation in three spheres

Exploitation is not only economic. It also works on the mind and through religion, and there the exploited often do not see it.

On each page the marked passages are the words of Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, from the books, as they are printed. The lines between them are ours and only lead from one passage to the next.

Not only economic

“Exploited” usually means exploited economically. That is only one stratum of human life.

Where the exploitation is not economic, the exploited may not know that it is happening.

Very often people say that a particular individual or a particular community of people is badly exploited. What they mean by “exploited” is this: that people are being exploited in the economic stratum. But if we go deeply into the matter, we shall discover that the exploitation has been perpetrated not only in the economic stratum, but also in the other strata of human existence – in different forms and on various pretexts.
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, Prout in a Nutshell Part 18, “Various Forms of Exploitation” (1980)
When the exploitation in the physical stratum is directly economic in character, even the common people can easily understand it, and they need not labour hard to comprehend it. This is because in the case of economic exploitation, the exploited people can easily understand who the exploiters are. But in the case of exploitation in other social spheres, the exploited people are not even aware that they are being exploited. This is why it is easy to exploit them in the social sphere, then create inferiority complexes in their minds to keep them under prolonged administrative domination and perpetuate the exploitation. This is easily done by the cunning exploiters. And the tragedy is that the exploited mass do not try to understand – they cannot understand, and they even refuse to understand – that they are victims of exploitation. So this is more dangerous.
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, Prout in a Nutshell Part 18, “Various Forms of Exploitation” (1980)

The physical sphere: wealth taken from others

The world is compared to a joint family. Dharma here means the path of righteousness in social affairs.

The remedy has two steps: pressure that takes away the power to exploit, then education that changes the person.

In a joint family every member is provided with adequate food, clothing, education and medical treatment, and amenities, as per their individual needs, according to the financial capacity of the entire family. If, however, any member of the family appropriates more grains, clothes, books or medicines than he or she requires, will that person not be the cause of distress to other members of the family? In such circumstances his or her actions will be certainly against dharma – certainly antisocial. Similarly, the capitalists of this modern world are anti-dharma, or antisocial, creatures. To accumulate massive wealth, they reduce others to skin and bones gnawed by hunger and force them to die of starvation; to dazzle people with the glamour of their garments, they compel others to wear rags; and to increase their own vital strength, they suck dry the vital juice of others.
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, Problems of the Day (1958)
Even if extreme steps, such as threats and circumstantial pressure, are taken, can it be said that the nature of those with vested interests is going to be reformed? Rather, they will always search for suitable opportunities to launch a counter-revolution. To protect the common people from the clutches of exploitation, as an initial measure we will have to create circumstantial pressure, but to reform the character of these ailing people, long-term arrangements will also have to be made for their psychic and spiritual education. Human society is ready to wait indefinitely to reform their character by psychic and spiritual methods, because by then their fangs will have been broken, and by creating circumstantial pressure, their capacity for exploitation will have been snatched away.
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, Problems of the Day (1958)

The psychic sphere: first make them feel inferior

Before one group exploits another economically, it teaches the other to think itself lower.

Pseudo-culture does the same work. It is imposed on people until they can no longer stand up.

One social group, guided by a particular type of social sentiment, exploits another group. First, the exploiters inject the idea in the minds of the exploited that the latter are degraded while the former are elevated – so they are entitled to greater rights, even to the right to exploit the inferior group. They are the first-class citizens, and the exploited second-class. If you analyse the history of the world, you will find that whenever one group exploited another in the economic sphere, they first created psychic exploitation by infusing inferiority complexes in the minds of the exploited mass. You will find that in each case of economic exploitation, psychic exploitation was the foundation: if you go deep into the background, you will discover a continuous and cunning attempt to create inferiority complexes in the minds of the exploited.
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, The Liberation of Intellect: Neohumanism, “Exploitation and Pseudo-Culture (Discourse 7)” (1982)
As you know, the mind has a natural tendency to degrade itself; it flows more easily downwards than upwards. So if some people, by virtue of their wealth, impose vulgar cinemas and dramas on others, this will break the latters’ spines and they will become paralysed. And those paralysed, spineless people will thenceforth never be able to stand unitedly against cultural or any other kind of exploitation. They will never be able to do so, because mentally they will be completely dead – their capacity to raise their heads in protest will have been crushed forever. How can they raise their heads again? This exploitation in the cultural sphere is accomplished by the propagation of pseudo-culture. Every honest, virtuous, rational person must fight against this pseudo-culture, and inspire others to do the same. If this is not done, the future of humanity will be sealed.
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, The Liberation of Intellect: Neohumanism, “Exploitation and Pseudo-Culture (Discourse 7)” (1982)

Psycho-economic exploitation

Psycho-economic exploitation weakens people in the mind first and exploits them economically afterward. Eight of its methods are listed.

The answer named is the liberation of intellect, and it begins with the intellectuals.

Psycho-economic exploitation is the latest form of dangerous and all-devouring capitalist exploitation. It is a special type of exploitation which first weakens and paralyses people psychologically in various ways, and then exploits them economically. Some of the methods of psycho-economic exploitation include, first, the suppression of the indigenous language and culture of local people; secondly, the extensive propagation of pseudo-culture, exemplified by pornographic literature which debases people’s mind and particularly undermines the vitality of the youth; thirdly, the imposition of numerous restrictions on women, forcing them to be economically dependent on men; fourthly, an unpsychological education system with frequent political interference by vested interests; fifthly, the negation of dharma in the name of secularism; sixthly, the balkanization of society into numerous castes and groups; seventhly, the damaging of society by the use of unnatural and harmful methods of birth control; and eighthly, placing the control of different mass media, such as newspapers, radio and television, in the hands of capitalists.
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, A Few Problems Solved Part 9, “Capitalism in Three Spheres” (1981)
To counteract this threat, powerful popular sentiments will have to be generated immediately for the liberation of intellect. For this, the first requisite factor is that intellectuals must keep their intellects pure and unblemished. Casting aside all their inertia and prejudices, intellectuals will have to mix with the common people and engage themselves in their welfare. They will have to assist the common people in their development and extend their support to all anti-exploitation movements. This approach will help to root out exploitation, stabilize the structure of society and expand the intellectual standard of the common people. Human society will move forward to a brilliant future with rapid steps.

The spiritual sphere: fear, heaven and hell

In the spiritual sphere the tools are dogma, the fear of hell and the promise of happiness in the next world.

Nityánitya viveka is the power to tell the permanent from the impermanent.

To stifle the progress of humanity, the followers of these religions play on human sentiments and other weaknesses. They want to perpetuate the hold of the vested interests by infusing an inferiority complex into the human mind. While preaching their religious ideas, some claim that the social, economic and political systems were direct creations of God and hence destined to be observed in all ages and all times with equal veneration. They pronounce that those who refuse to follow this divine decree will be doomed to burn in the scorching heat of God’s wrath, or dammed to suffer eternal hell-fire. To deny people the scope of verifying the rationality of different scriptures they declare that such-and-such scriptures are infallible and so nobody has the right to question their veracity. If the philosophical texts contradict the scriptures, then their propounders will be declared as atheists.
Shrii Shrii Ánandamúrti, Subháśita Saḿgraha Part 6, “The Five Kinds of Conscience (Viveka)” (1957)
Religion is practiced for the fulfilment of mundane aspirations. This is the reason why a class of clergymen emerged centring around the religion. Ultimately the adherents of these religions become mere tools in the hands of vested interests. With the awakening of nityánitya viveka in human minds and the opening of the door of scientific knowledge, it will not be possible to deceive the people in the name of religion or by holding out the lure of happiness in the next world. The vested interests are quite aware of this fact and hence strive to keep the masses lost in the darkness of ignorance. Like parasites, they manoeuvre themselves to misappropriate, by injecting fear and inferiority complexes, a lion’s share of what the ignorant masses earn with their sweat and blood. Religious exploiters maintain an unholy alliance with the capitalistic exploiters.

The fight on two fronts

Two enemies are named: those who exploit in the economic sphere, and those who enslave the mind with dogma.

The people of today must move ahead while fighting against the two enemies – the bloodsuckers who exploit in the economic sphere, and the intellectual satans who not only exploit human beings but bring them down to the level of animality. I request the present human race to continue their endless fight on these two fronts. They should remember that on both these fronts they are fighting against enemies who, being guided by dogma, have no logic in their method of exploitation. Though they are exploiting people in the socio-economic, socio-intellectual and spiritual spheres, once their conscience is aroused against dogma, their exploitation will automatically cease. The gigantic demons of exploitation will vanish in a flash.
