The recent storms that struck the mainland left a trail of destruction that goes far beyond the visible material damage. In many parts of the country, the scene is one of isolation: blocked roads, power and water cuts, and the silence caused by the lack of communications.

At AMURT Portugal, our volunteers are already on the ground to identify the most critical needs and bring direct aid to those who suffer most.

Reports from the Field: The Urgency of the Basics

One of our volunteers traveled to Vieira de Leiria, where the absolute priority is protecting homes. With roofs devastated by the storm, families urgently need plastic sheeting to prevent the rain from continuing to destroy what little remains.

In Nesperal, the situation is equally alarming. A local volunteer describes a reality of deep isolation:

“There are elderly people alone, in the dark. In the mountains, the night is frightening without any light. I saw an elderly man without batteries for his old flashlight and went to help him. Having some light after 5:30 p.m. is essential for the dignity and safety of these people.”

The population of Nesperal, mostly elderly and in need, faces a shortage of basic goods. Local shops are sold out and, unfortunately, price gouging is occurring on vital items such as generators and plastic sheeting.

How can you help today?

AMURT is coordinating efforts to deliver basic necessities, focusing on:

  1. Protection: Plastic sheeting and tarps for roofs.
  2. Light and Energy: Flashlights, batteries and generators.
  3. Food: Non-perishable food.
  4. Bottled water
