More than 2,800 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck central Morocco on 8/9/23. It struck just after 23:00 local time, at a relatively shallow depth 71km (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km. The quake – measuring magnitude 6.8 – sent people rushing into the streets in Marrakesh and other cities, and many of the deaths were said to be in hard-to-reach mountain areas. Currently, it is estimated that 300,000 people are affected by the earthquake.
AMURT has a team in Marrakesh that offers Mental Health & Psycho-Social Support (MHPSS) and the distribution of non-food items. The team is partnering with the local JOOD association and the Mohammed VI hospital in Marakesh.
