A good thirty second-hand iPads were donated by the Istituto Leone XIII of Milan to the Wasswa school run by Amurt in Uganda. The refurbished and perfectly working devices were delivered by Prof. Marzia Galeotti, who besides teaching at the school is also coordinator of Avventure nel mondo. Amurt Italia acted as intermediary because this donation completes the project “Donating Knowledge,” which has seen a library equipped with 10 computers rise in a few months and be recently inaugurated at the Ugandan school center.
The Amurt Uganda School currently hosts about 400 primary and secondary students who arrive on foot in the morning, sometimes after an hour's journey along hillside paths. In Wasswa there is no electricity; generators and solar panels are used to run the computers.
“On my trip last March – says Paolo Bocchi, AMURT volunteer and project contact – I was able to see firsthand the state of hardship of the African country; our School, which stands in an unspoiled natural environment, represents in that area a source of pride for the way it is currently organized. We plan to build a dormitory for the boys and girls who, living far away, prefer to stay overnight at the facility; at present they sleep in the classroom, but the situation is by now unsustainable. We would also need to reopen an infirmary that Amurt ran in the past and which is absolutely needed, closed for lack of the funds necessary to pay the nurse and medicines. In Uganda, as in several other countries in the world, it is possible through Amurt to support the education and growth of children through long-distance adoption.
