Fundraising Campaign to Support the Tsunami Victims
With two Portuguese on the ground, AMURT Portugal promoted a fundraising campaign on several fronts.
Besides an internet awareness campaign, various street actions were carried out, notably at Parque das Nações, at the Jardins de Belém and in Porto.
Afterwards an auction of original works was held at the Sintra Yoga and Meditation Center.
In the Azores a series of parallel activities were developed, including an awareness camp. In the words of the local coordinator Brígida Serrano:
"Francisco and I have been busy preparing banners and materials for this weekend's concert. A press release was sent to television, radio and newspapers. The Red Cross assured us of its collaboration. A license was also granted by the Municipal Council of Angra do Heroísmo, for two consecutive weekends, to use the central square for AMURT's humanitarian initiatives.
We also had the pleasant surprise that the Mayor gave authorization for us to use the auditorium of the Graça cultural center for AMURT's benefit concert.
The idea of the camp was thought up at the last minute; I contacted the Red Cross about the idea of setting up a tent for this purpose and they readily collaborated.
I stayed in the tent all night, and volunteers came to help in shifts to ensure a presence at the various AMURT stands. During this week there was distribution of leaflets at the Guarita Supermarket (Angra do Heroísmo) and Modelo (Praia da Vitória), as well as in the central square (Praça Velha) by these volunteers."
The next day, January 22, a solidarity concert took place at the Cultural and Congress Center of Angra do Heroísmo. The main artist was Dada Nabhaniilananda (http://www.eternalwave.com/), musician, monk and teacher of yoga and meditation. The show also featured Diogo Cunha on 2nd guitar and the special participation of the Swedish jazz singer of Polish origin Jolanta Borusiewicz.
