Earthquake update: the volunteers are on their way home. A new team will take over from them.
The Amurt volunteers are on their way home. “It was two weeks of cooperation with many associations, with whom we shared the difficulties and joys of being useful to those who have lost a lot if not everything,” the volunteers recounted. They did their best, seizing every opportunity for service as a privilege. “The refugee camp,” the volunteers continue, “is made up of many tents and even has a mobile library, loved by everyone. Books have the ability to let us escape from reality, and the one that is breathed now in the areas hit by the quake is a reality that is emotionally hard to live with. The refugees’ response to our presence was positive. Our small humanitarian effort did not go unnoticed. We managed to distribute balls, jump ropes, notebooks and crayons. When the service was over we said goodbye to the children and informed the authorities that our team would return to Italy the next day, but that other volunteers of ours would take over from us and continue the mission.” “We are going home,” the volunteers concluded, “with the hope of inspiring other volunteers to spend even just a couple of weeks in Turkey, because it is a real experience, capable of opening new horizons in the spirit.” Soon a new team of volunteers will leave to continue the relief mission for the earthquake victims on the Turkish-Syrian border.
