Nepal is facing one of the most devastating disasters in recent times following the catastrophic floods along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river basins. Entire villages have been swept away, leaving behind destroyed homes, farms and livelihoods. According to the Nepali disaster management authorities, over 1,300 people have lost their lives and more than 5,000 are missing or unaccounted for. (Radio Nepal)

After a preliminary assessment, the AMURT and AMURTEL team mobilized 16 tons of food and essential goods for the severely affected communities in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot areas. One of the most complex missions was reaching the Nilakantha high school, which hosts more than 1,700 children and adults. Two hundred of these children came from a village completely swept away by the water, which destroyed their homes, their crops, their personal belongings and everything familiar to them. The children were saved because they were at school when the flood struck the area. The team learned from the principal that the school had only enough supplies left for three days. Many children had been wearing the same clothes for days, having lost everything. The team immediately organized an emergency delivery. The 45-kilometer journey took 15 hours because of landslides that had severely damaged and blocked the roads. Heavy machinery had to be used to clear the route and rescue vehicles that had become stuck. Despite these extraordinary difficulties, the team reached the Nilakantha school and delivered food, clothing, personal hygiene products, sanitary pads and cooking equipment, goods that the children and adults sheltering there urgently needed.

Future needs

The needs remain enormous: from food, to water, to housing, to medical care, to psychosocial support for children and other vulnerable people. With entire villages destroyed and thousands missing, it is essential to ensure long-term assistance to rebuild homes, restore livelihoods, support schools and strengthen communities.

The AMURT and AMURTEL team will continue to adapt its intervention as needs evolve.

Thank you to all the people who have contributed with their support and help, and to the AMURT and AMURTEL offices around the world: their generous support allows us to reach people in the most difficult-to-access places.
