Update on the situation in Haiti (January 15)
Members of AMURT & AMURTEL are already on the ground, and more support teams will continue to arrive in the coming days to assist the operation “Give your heart to Haiti”.
Satellite communication has been established with the team in Port au Prince, and mobile phone communications are being made through the Dominican Republic.
At this moment arrangements have been made to help people receive life-saving medical services in two ways: by collaborating with other agencies to quickly set up an emergency clinic in Port au Prince in a heavily affected neighborhood located near the airport, and by moving people from the most volatile areas of Port au Prince to an area further north where they will have access to food, water and shelter.
1,000 patients rushed to an AMURT clinic this morning for emergency treatment. AMURT / AMURTEL will send more doctors and people specialized in emergencies (some of whom have already worked with AMURT / AMURTEL before and who specialized in emergency relief for disasters and natural calamities), as well as medical supplies to help the several thousand people who are expected at the clinic in the coming days. The supplies that were there have already run out.
AMURT & AMURTEL have more than 2 decades of experience in work of this kind in Haiti and have facilitated many development projects. AMURTEL focuses in particular on the special needs of women and children in disaster situations.
The teams are responding to this calamity quickly and effectively and are committed to staying as long as necessary to relieve the suffering caused by this natural disaster.
Financial support is urgently needed. Make your donation today >
